i love my little collection of icons and religious bits, everything from tin paintings from mexico, crosses from spain, a string of  coffee beans from jamaica,  a thread of shells, and some photos by my daughter alice…….

dog days of summer

did you know that july and august are known as the dog days of summer, hot, sultry days!  it started off baking hot here, but now we have the typical grey creeping in…….

Dog Days were popularly believed to be an evil time “the Sea boiled, the Wine turned sour, Dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies.” according to Brady’s Clavis Calendaria, 1813.

hampstead heath

its a perfect time to walk hampstead heath – especially with all this warmth – bring your costume and swim in the ponds (i still have not braved this) and finish with tea and scones at kenwood house.

how to remove some of those yellow marks on your white clothes…..

dont you hate it every summer, you go to get your lovely white dresses out for your holidays and there are all these yellow marks over them?  apparently, even if your clothes look clean and there are no apparent stains, you should still wash them before you put them back, especially clothes that you dont wear that often.   I have so many antique clothes, that they actually disintegrate with too much washing, so i  dont wash everything each time.  anyhow, i have discovered that if you soak them in ecover laundry bleach – i have only done this with white things, then the yellow stain miraculously disappears!    i am not guaranteeing it for everything, but the few times that i have tried it, its worked for me.

incidentally, my beautiful victorian blouse that i wear rips everytime, so i now sew vintage lace ribbons into the holes to patch up and it seems to not only cover the hole, but adds to the quirkiness of the blouse.   i used to just hang them in my bedroom as decoration, but have decided that its silly not to wear them.   i tend to buy my vintage ribbons from the cloth house, they have a lovely selection as well as interesting fabrics.

for robert

happy birthday robert – friend, lover, inspiration, soulmate

You inspire me
When my eyes begin to glaze
You inspire me
In so many ways
When I’m on the ground
You seem to know
How to pour blessings down
And spread them all around

You inspire me
When my well is almost dry
You inspire me
And in the twinkling of an eye
I’m back on my feet
You’re so inspiring to me

The road is long
And it winds through the night
But when you’re near
You let there be light

You inspire me
When my eyes begin to glaze
You inspire me
In so many ways
I’m back on my feet
You’re so inspiring
I don’t have to wish upon a star
That’s how inspiring you are

birthday kiss to my daughter

cant believe that my baby is 17 today!  its beautiful and sad – a passing of time, a transition into womanhood, a progression, a growing, its everything and yet there is so much for her to do and look forward to in the future – its almost the beginnings of adult life.

always my inspiration, my model,  my pride and joy,  my beautiful maude – i thank you for all the times you have patiently sat, ran, walked, poised for my photos!

a beautiful thought for the day

i have met so many friends through my blog, some i never knew and still have never met  - and others who were already old friends of mine . what I love are the messages of support and thanks, which always gives you the belief to continue writing.  some days I feel that I am writing for myself, but it is always a pleasure to receive words of encouragement from others.

this post is especially for a dear friend Carolyn who always reads my blog;  not only has she been a friend that has encouraged, supported, praised and influenced me in my pursuits, but is also a loving, caring and humorous person who has always been around since I started working in london.  you may remember that I posted about her beautiful pom poms in the past.    dismissing her own talent and  creativity to help others, she is totally unselfish, patient and a joy to be around.  she particularly loves my flower cards and has been so far my biggest supporter – I think she has bought every single flower card which always leads me to adding more designs.   and now i am progressing from cards to a self published  book, again championed by Carolyn – I hope to release it in the autumn – so thank you Carolyn for your never-ending  encouragement and belief in myself.

for a beautiful daughter

you can never forget alice’s birthday, april 1st, and you will never forget alice – she is more than special – happy birthday darling.

april fool

She said I’ll see you in the morning, darling
I see you when the kids have gone to school
But well I know tomorrow is your birthday
I know you know that you’re are an April Fool
We used to roam so freely. It’s been so long
I took my dreams to bed now where they belong

She said there’s dust and cobwebs on your north star
There no more fussing the campfires in your hair
I’ll see the wheels there rusted in the backyard
I know we’re not going anywhere
We used to roam so freely. It’s been so long
I took my dreams to bed now where they belong

lavender roses

As with other roses, lavender roses have their own special meanings which have evolved over the years of their existence. The lavender rose is often a sign of enchantment and love at first sight. Those who have been enraptured by feelings of love and adoration have used lavender roses to express their romantic feelings and intentions. The color purple also has a traditional association with royalty. In this regard, shades of lavender roses can suggest an air of regal majesty and splendor.

Lavender roses also share some of the symbolism of the fabled blue rose. Because blue roses do not occur naturally, they have come to represent the mysterious and unattainable. The goal of discovering the first blue rose has ignited many imaginations. While the quest for truly blue roses continues, many of the meanings associated with them have become tied to its nearest existing relative, the lavender rose. Thus, lavender roses can also represent wonder and impossibility, with a sense of the magical.

some of my favourite creams contain both lavender and roses – for really good quality and affordable creams that are gentle to use, try  B natural, a small family run business - they are handmade in cornwall and are full of natural ingredients.

new years resolutions

so for 2016 i have lots of the same old intentions which i know by mid january will soon fade away.  the kids are growing up and life is speeding past – i managed to photograph a couple of weddings, impending births and sadly witness the loss of a friend who was far too young to die – these important events in one’s life made me realise that  what is really important is your health, family and happiness.  so here are a few things that i will be bearing in mind….

generosity of thought

kindness of heart

patience of mind

selflessness in spirit

a little phrase that really resonates    – friendship isn’t about who you have known the longest – it’s about those who came and never left your side ….

and specifically with my own family, calm not anger, praise not criticise, speak not shout

wishing you all a joyous and healthy 2016!

after all the hard work of shopping, wrapping, preparing and cleaning – this is how i spent my new years day – sat on the sofa in front of the tv wrapped in a blanket.
